This is a shot from a while back of a Shayne fishing on a trip to the Okisollo Rapids at the top of Quadra Island. A very beautiful spot, it was at a point of relaxation in between surfs of the tidal rapid.

Humans are amazing. We walk, run, jump, climb, twist, contort our form through out our day. Recently, I had the opportunity to photograph a group of people very adapt at putting their bodies into some amazing positions. This was a group of capoeiristas from Axe Capoeria Comox Valley.

When we set up the shoot it was raining out, so we set up inside at the Comox Rec Centre. It was a good experience to try and get some different images. I wanted to get some images that showcased the form, strength and focus

There was some trial and error, working some of the forms and getting the artists to hold them. The Capoeriaistas were excellent for photographing.

Liked the look of the images in Black and White, which was set when during the processing of them. I liked the look it presented.

Blueberry Hill

Remember those old diners, the one’s with the long counter’s and the booths. Scenes from old movies, thick pancakes, bottle of syrup, loads of butter, homey atmosphere. Well this place is all that.

Erin and myself were down in Las Vegas, this morning we were checking out the worlds largest Skechers shoe outlet before heading off to The Gun Store. However being hungry we saw this place and decided to check it out. The staff were great and the food was good. It has some very interesting items on the menu as well. Check out the sinful delights for some decedent eating.

I was able to get some different shots from the interior and of the food. Worth checking out if you are down in Las Vegas.

It was after the “secret session” at Polka Dot Pants in Cumberland. It was great watching the artists play for an audience of about 30, mostly children, which were watching and listening with rapt interest.

Having scouted out a couple of locations close by that would work. Two outdoor and another indoors at Tarbell’s Deli. We had about a 1/2 hour for the shoot before they had to go off for their sound check at the Cumberland Museum. Made for some quick set-ups and working some of the lighting.

My favourite part of the shoot was when they played a couple of songs inside of Tarbell’s Deli. Got some fun shots while that was going on. Provided a nice relaxed atmosphere to shoot in.

Had the opportunity to get together with Todd and Tanya a while back, like about a year. have been slacking on some of my posts. My other work, travel, adventure seem to keep me busy at times. However it is always good fun to get together.

They wanted some nice portraits in there back yard which is great as there was a number of different props and settings to use.

One spot we were able to get two different feels without moving. All with the help of a sliding door. There was the fence, the tire swing and some old chairs sitting on the edge of the woods.

Did most of the shoots with my 70-200mm f4 @ f8 or so. Dropped it down a little bit for a the shot in the chairs. The lighting was one speed light on a stick and one on a Joby flexible stand. The light on a stick had a umbrella some shots with a backing, other times it was used as a shoot through. It was fun trying out some different ideas. Tanya also wanted a shot of her and the dog, it was a nice to have her daughter join the shot.

Interesting Details

I was out in town, just having finished taking some photos of Luke Blu Guthrie and had talked to Paul about doing some photography in the shop so decided to pop into Blue Toque to grab some shots.

I love wandering around there shop and seeing the different objects that have appeared in their store. I did notice my paddling pants are still there, almost a year now. Oh well that is the thing with consignment shopping, you never know what you will find.

It is a place full of details, lots of interesting objects. Taking my camera and one speedlight on a stick to give a different, dark, surreal feeling to the images. I used a simple diffuser; aka plastic and a reflector for a couple of the shots.

It was fun looking for things with different character in the shop. One of my favourite being the double skiers and the ping pong tournament setup. The shop is full of different items. Great things to look at and to stock your closet full of outdoor gear.

Met up with Luke last week. We had been playing phone tag but we were able to get together for a couple of hours in the early afternoon. It was a cloudy day with some rain starting to fall at the beginning of the shoot and just pouring out by the end. Luke was a great subject to shoot, we found a couple of different locations to play with.

One was out a old road heading to Comox lake, it was some concrete pillars that were small and provided a neat setting for some light set ups. By the time we were done at that location it was pouring out. The second location I had been to couple of weeks earlier to meet up with Pat Kitto. This time I tried the other side, always good to look at things from different angles. The main reason though was that it was the only side that was useable, the other side being soaked with rain.

It too was a tight location, it was fun getting a couple of speedlites set up. Had a umbrella, which involved some buggy cords and a Honl Snoot on another to provide some colour and a different look.

Relaxing in the House

Last week I met up to get some photo’s of Patrick Kitto in a urban setting. I wanted to try a couple of different locations with flash lighting and get some different feel to the photos.

The morning light was kind of foggy. It was like a big soft box had descended over the valley. It was going to be a good day for photographs.

Met up with Pat at his house. His basement was the first location. Provided a good interior to shoot a cople of different images. It was a good chance to use my wide angle lens as the space was tight. Set up two flash one with a white cloth in front of the umbrella to make a nice big white light and another to camera left to use as the fill light.

After leaving there we heading a spot off Puntledge rd. Nice and colourful it provided a different backdrop. We were taking a couple of different images and even had some unexpected company. Someone had phoned the police to see what we were up to. Ah photo shoots always interesting. A cople of questions and we were left to our devices.

After that it was off to our last location and the fog had hung around so we were able to put it to good use getting some shots around the Railway Station. Always an interesting location, the fog added a nice feel to the location. We were able to grab a couple of different photograph’s down by the rails before maing our way to the station to get some different looks. The pay phone came in handy, as it is one of 3150 pay phones in BC. Of Course ,if you needed one in AB there is only 231. There are still 84in Courtenay. It was a good interactive object to use.

When does the train come in?

Sorry digressed there for a moment. We set up with one light for most of the photos at the Train Station. We were able to grab some good shots of the Pat, waiting on the train.

Sew What, I Sew

I was getting Jason Stevens to build up some fleece bags for my pocket wizard TT units. His shop on Dunsmuir ave, the main street of Cumberland, BC and the interior of his shop is very fun and funky. Very much a working space. I asked him if I could try a couple of different setups and get some photographs of him at work.

Setting up a couple of flashes mounted on the Flex tt5 from pocket wizard and a couple of coloured gels on one flash to add some interesting light. I worked a Honl snoot on to one flash and had a Honl grid on the other. Mounting the flashes on a couple of Manfrotto stands and placing them out of the frame. I was able to get the feeling I was going for.

It was an interesting spot to mess around with some lighting. Next I want to get some filter kits from Honl. Going to be interesting to play with some colour.

Jason is quite adept at making a variety of items. Worth checking out his shop for sure.

Local Artist

Artist Jamie Willms

Having known Jamie for a long time, I asked her awhile back to take some photos of her making some of her different pottery and some of her finished work. She is a very talented artist. It was fun to see the pottery come together from the soft unfounded beginnings to watching her hands mould it into a beautiful shape. Then seeing it after it had been fired in the oven and the different colours and patterns that emerge from the fire and heat. For her inspiration comes from many different sources; teachers, environment, and heritage. Function and beauty play a big role. Most of all, it is important for her to find happiness in the making of her pots and for her work to bring happiness to others.

Pottery provides some different challenges to photograph. We tried a few different backgrounds and lighting setups before deciding on one that brought life and energy to the pottery. You can find her works and others at The Potters Place in Courtenay, BC and on Facebook.
